I give a couple of short readings from the book (which I don't read as well as the excellent narrator of my audiobooks, Tim Campbell), along with a few comments on Hobbes's origins. This interview took place before the Hobbes audiobooks were commissioned.

The interview lasts about 15 minutes.

Sorry your browser does not support the audio for this file.

Summary of the interview:

The Hobbes character and series were inspired by seeing a TV presenter walking around London dressed as a Neanderthal.

Andy is sort of based upon the worst aspects of my character and was also inspired by Nigel Bruce's bumbling interpretation of Dr Watson from the 1930-40's films of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories,

Mrs Goodfellow's name came from a sprite in Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream, and she came into the story as an equivalent to Mrs Hudson in Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories.

Sorenchester is loosely based upon a version of Cirencester, with changes to street names and venues, and using places from history that no longer exist, such as The Shambles.

The Bones is now the 4th story in what was going to be a trilogy.

Andy, like Dregs the dog, is adopted by Hobbes as a pet, only Dregs is more useful, which Andy doesn't realize until much later.

The cosy mystery, comedy, paranormal fantasy Inspector Hobbes and the Bones is available in paperback, hardback, ebook and digital audio download.

‘I was grateful for having been born human’

There’s going to be trouble. Andy Caplet’s wife goes away, someone is out to get him, and he loses nearly everything in a storm. Amazing both himself and his unhuman friend Inspector Hobbes, he heroically rescues flood victims and uncovers something shocking.

Is Andy being set up for blackmail by the apparently charming young woman who attempts to seduce him, or is something even more sinister afoot? Hobbes certainly believes so, and he’s getting worried.

The recording is now available on Nick's website Wordsong.org.uk

"Excerpts from a conversation with Wilkie Martin, author of the four
books in the “Unhuman” trilogy, (yes, you read that right). Wilkie talks
about the inspiration for his titular character, Inspector Hobbes,
writing groups and the fruition of all that hard work…"

They are narrated by Tim Campbell (timcampbell.me) an award winning audiobook narrator, actor and opera singer. It is easy to see why he has won awards as he has a fantastic voice and I feel very lucky he agreed to read them. He has really brought the characters to life. So hopefully he will now be the voice of Hobbes that you hear when you read the books.

Like many people, I tend to read a selection of reviews before deciding whether to buy a product or a book. Also, like many people, I actually write reviews infrequently, and I write fewer now than I used to. Partly this is because my partner once told me off when I was thinking of posting a less than glowing review of a book by a well-known author even though I 'd given up on it at about half way! Perhaps another reason I don't write so many reviews is that I now know what it's like to be on the receiving end! Either way I do know they are very helpful for an author and for the purchaser.

Do reviews matter? And what does it mean to the author?

As I read and depend upon the published reviews of others when I make my decisions to buy, I think they matter. Having them makes it more likely that people will take a chance on an author when they come across their books for the first time. Once a few reviews are available, a book gains (or not!) some of the social proof that is important in today's online world. An online review is the equivalent of a personal recommendation from a friend.

Reviews are also often a prerequisite when setting up book promotions since many of the best promotion websites and newsletters require a minimum number and a minimum average value on a book before accepting them for a promotion. The promotion sites also use reviews as they only want to recommend readable books to their subscribers.

What can I say in a review?

Say something about the book? Was it good quality? Did it meet your expectations? Did you like it? Would you read something by this author again? Would you recommend it to a friend? What made you get it in the first place? Was it a gift? And did you enjoy it? Was there a character in the book you particularly liked?

Suggestions for reviews:

'I really enjoyed this book'

'The perfect book for a summer evening'

'An enjoyable holiday read'

'Just the light funny read I was looking for'

'I have no hesitation recommending this book - 5 stars'

'I'm rereading it now I enjoyed it so much'

'I've brought all the author's other books after reading this'

'I can't wait for the next book'

Have a look at what the other reviews say - if you agree with them then you can write the same or something similar. Or if you disagree with a particular review say the opposite.

How long does a review have to be?

They don't have to say much at all. Anything from 4-5 words to 100's of words if you feel so inclined.

What shouldn't you say?

Unless buying direct from the publisher, it isn't helpful to others to say that a book was delivered quickly or not as this doesn't say anything about the book itself.

Try not to make the review just a plug for a book by another author as this affects the reputation of the author you mention and doesn't help them. This type of review even has a name - 'sock-puppetry'.

Remember that the description or price of the book, or the details in other reviews, can change, so if you refer to them include the parts you agree or disagree with.

And remember that authors have human feelings!

Where do you write reviews?

Most online retailers allow you to add reviews to listed books. And online library services such as Goodreads also have review options. Write a review in the same place as you buy or list the book.

Find the book you want to review and then click on the option to write one.

If it is a free review copy then the review will often say so. 'Verified Purchase' will be added automatically if you brought the book using the same account.
When you write a review on Amazon you will receive an Amazon reviewer ranking. When you write more and more reviews or when your reviews get a 'like' then you move up the rankings. If you write a lot of reviews and get into the top 1000 or above then you are awarded a reviewer badge automatically. Provided you haven't un-ticked the option to show 'Top Reviewer Badges' then the badge will appear automatically next to your name.

A 'Vine Voice' is someone in Amazon's Vine programme, where they receive free products and as a part of this programme have to write a review for those they receive.
Is the apparently charming young woman who attempts to seduce him merely setting him up for blackmail, or
is something even more sinister afoot? Inspector Hobbes certainly believes so,

I have recorded 5 short extracts from early on in the book as booktrailers and all have now been released. I hope you enjoy them.

I've also recorded short extracts from the previous books in the series, which you can find on my youtube channel @wilkiewrites (or on my website / facebook), And if you have a daft sense of humour you may also enjoy my silly poems - also on my youtube channel,

Inspector Hobbes and the Bones, and all my books are available on Amazon, Apple, Kobo, Nook etc in ebook, They are also available as paperbacks and hardbacks.

Writers in the Brewery invited me to speak at its February meeting at New Brewery Arts in Cirencester, and I was lucky that fellow local author Richard Hensley (a writer of epic science fiction) volunteered to record the event. After a little editing to remove some background hum and hiss the audio is now available below and on my website. The talk included a QnA at the end (starting at about 33 mins). The following is a summary of much of what I mentioned.

Names

Names are an important part of a book and I base the ones I use on something that means something to me or helps to inspire me:

I used the name Hobbes since it has connotations of hobgoblins, Hobbs End in Quatermass and the Pit, where all the weird goings on happen, and also gives a nod towards Thomas Hobbes the philosopher (who was not a handsome man). In addition it suggests 'hub' since the stories revolve around Hobbes, and the name has a similar root.

Andy Caplet was inspired by seeing a photo of André Caplet and fellow composer Claude Debussy, in which Claude came across as large and confident and André appeared small and insignificant.

Mrs Goodfellow comes from the name of a sprite or spirit in Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night's Dream. Mrs Goodfellow is a good cook and coincidentally there is an old American cookbook by a Mrs Goodfellow. Although it is possible I heard about it when I briefly worked in the US I don't remember it.

I describe Hobbes as unhuman, since he isn't quite human as we understand it. I chose that word since inhuman suggests cruel or nasty which he isn't (normally).

Inspector Hobbes and the Bones like my other titles, has more than one meaning. The story does contain real bones, but also reveals a little of what goes on under the skin of the town of Sorencester.

The names of the Elwess (Matilda, Hilda, Aubrey and Alvin) come from English and Scandinavian Folklore and suggest mythical beings - sprites and elves and suchlike.

Solomon Slugg was actually a real name that I came across at the Rifles Museum in Salisbury. I thought it too good to waste, and invented a whole family of Sluggs.

Mrs Nutter is as the name suggests! She doesn't think much of Andy.

The place names in Sorencester are often corruptions of place names in Cirencester, and Sorenchester is of course a terribly twisted version of Cirencester.

Hobbes

My initial idea for the monstrous Hobbes came from seeing an Alan Titchmarsh programmes in which he had himself made up as a Neanderthal and walked around London, barely getting a second glance. Although I don't see Hobbes as Neaderthal, I do have him as someone from a distant offshoot of the human tree. A police uniform would be a great thing to hide behind until an unhuman could be accepted as a fixture in a community.
I was also inspired by Sherlock Holmes where Conan Doyle used a narrator to describe Sherlock since it was difficult to get inside Holmes's head as he is so different. Sherlock Holmes is why I use a narrator and a housekeeper.

Andy

Andy is partially inspired by Nigel Bruce's version of Dr Watson from the older Basil Rathbone films.
Andy is taken in like a stray, in the same way as Dregs the dog.
Andy is forced to help rescue people.
Writing

Write about what you know is good advice (although you do not have to have known it for long), which is why I base the Hobbes stories in Sorenchester, a strangely distorted version of Cirencester. I don't plot beforehand, but have a start point and an end point in mind and let the characters map out the direction the story takes to get there. When I have the first draft, I read it through immediately, changing any obvious mistakes and adding changes including some of those suggested by my writing group and by my partner. If time is not too pressing, I then like to leave it a while before editing and rewriting in earnest, making sure everything is consistent, that the story hangs together and that the writing flows. It takes many rewrites before I am more or less satisfied. I use a real calendar for checking dates, days of the week, lighting up times, stages of the moon etc. In editing, some parts are expanded, some are removed and some shortened. The first book lost its first 2 chapters, which were when I was writing my way into the book, and one in the middle which slowed things down too much. I wish I could write faster: I can't match Alexander McCall Smith's output of 4-5000 words a day. If I can do half of that I'm very pleased. I do however have the same cover designer.

Inspector Hobbes and the Bones

As well as being about the weather, this book was inspired by themes of immigration. All of us are either immigrants ourselves or have ancestors that were (sometimes many generations ago). In this book Hobbes has to police some new dangerous and mysterious arrivals. It also features the events that occur to the hapless Andy, who early on gets punched, is nearly run down and is shot in the buttock with an air-rifle.
The book deals with floods, identity theft, corrupt politicians, the seedy underbelly of the restaurant trade, dangerous animals, blackmail and is a humorous story with a hint of fantasy.
Some of my recurring characters also comes into it - including little Billy Shawcroft, and 'Skeleton' Bob Nibblet (who is not an actual skeleton, as some of my reviewers have thought).

New Book

I'm working on new book, provisionally entitled Razor. It is about a suicidal man's struggles to achieve an heroic death. Although it is not an Hobbes book, it is set in the same world and some parts are in Sorencester. It has a cast of new characters. I do intend to write further Hobbes books at some point.
QnA

How much of yourself do you see in your characters, and which characters?
Quite a lot of me is in Andy, mostly the worst bits. He has too many negative aspects, but will come through in the end if pushed. I'm not easily pushed but am easily led. Andy is an amazingly clumsy chap to whom odd things happen, and surprisingly many of the incidents I write about have been inspired by reality - either things that have happened to me or to someone I know. There are many more true stories I could use but they may not be believable.
Hobbes has aspects of my grandfather - gruff and kindly. A father figure for Andy.
Mrs Goodfellow is a good cook because I like to think I am one.
There is a bit of myself in all the characters, even though overall none of them is like me.
I do distinguish myself from Andy though as Andy drinks lager which is something I would never do. Hobbes is a tea drinker something I share with him.

When you said he is unhuman. What do you mean by that?
He's not quite a human being. He's gone down a different path of the evolutionary tree, though there is probably a common ancestor somewhere.

How is this revealed in his character then?
There are various weird parts of him. Where most detectives follow visual clues, Hobbes follows nasal ones. He sniffs his way. He has an acute sense of smell. He is enormously powerful and bulky and being all muscle, he doesn't float. Instead he just walks along the bottom and hopes for the best when he is in deep water.

Did you think about all these characteristics before, or did they just kind of develop?
A lot of them were there before, but some of them developed. Sniffing, powerfulness, strength were all there from the start, but some others did develop as it went on including his method of de-stressing by crunching up raw bones.

Does this impact on people around him then?
To an extent yes, though some of them aren't human either. Most are quite well behaved. There are even a couple of ghouls in one of the other books. They live on bones and keep opening up graves. Hobbes lets them get on with it as long as they clear up afterwards.

You don't describe it as fantasy do you? But is has that tinge in it.
It has a tinge to it yes. On the surface everything is normal but there is a thread of fantasy that runs through it.

Isn't that quite difficult though?
It is difficult to get the balance right. I do think having a completely normal surface and setting it in a twisted version of Cirencester helps, because I can feel what is going on there and know what is real. I can then twist these little bits through the story.
It's a bit similar to John Wyndham - he used to always do that, to keep the normal situation in a normal society and then add something extraordinary to it. I think that is what I was trying to do.

Does he get more unhuman as things progress or does he stay the same?
He stays much the same. Although now and again little bits, new little oddities will turn up. Like when Andy is ill in bed and he sees Hobbes's face in the window upside down.

Does it relate to the moon?
No, Hobbes is always the same.

I'm thinking werewolf.
No, although werewolves do come into Hobbes and the Curse. They are actually quite friendly, although both Dregs and Andy catch fleas off them.

Do you understand him, because you said Andy doesn't understand him?
I understand what he is doing. If you watch an animal you can describe what it is doing but you can't say what is going on in its head. It is the same with Hobbes. I can describe him but not what he is thinking. Andy will put his own interpretation on how he thinks Hobbes is thinking.

So do people interpret him in different ways then?
Mostly it seems to be very similar. People have their own image of him and it tends to gel and to be quite consistent. Occasionally people have different ideas such as 'Skeleton' Bob being a real skeleton.

Have you got any actors in mind for the film or television version?
That would be great. No, I haven't really. There was a guy called André the Giant, he would have made a reasonable Hobbes. As for the others I don't really know. Maybe Martin Freeman as Andy. It is a hard question as I have my own impressions and it is difficult to put that onto actors

Do you like him? Or are you going to be like Conan Doyle and kill him off?
At the moment I like him. It is a point, because he has been around for a long time and probably should have retired about 60 years ago. At some stage, if I keep on writing him, and I do intend to at some at point, he may have to retire. Although he is powerful he is also quite vulnerable. He's not immune to getting shot, and in this book shows he can't cope with deep water - he just holds his breath and hopes for the best. In his way he is quite selfless. He is there to protect the public and his values were drummed into him by his adoptive parents, who were human. Hobbes and the Gold Diggers has more about his background, where he is from. There was a tribe of his people living in the Blacker mountains, which are like the Black mountains but a bit further away.
I’m delighted my unhuman series of books has new covers for
both the paperback and ebooks. I do, though, have a soft spot for the old ones
as the designs of these incorporated some photographs I had taken (mostly in
the Cotswolds and on Dartmoor) and also included some of my ideas, and I
thought they were very distinctive. I’m sorry to see them go. However my
publisher has decided that now there are 3 books in the series (so far), a new consistent
approach is required that treats them as a series. I’m very lucky they commissioned
the new covers from a top designer (who has done covers for Iain Banks,
Alexander McCall-Smith, Roald Dahl and Wilbur Smith, amongst many others). I’m
excited to see what happens next. I really like them and I got as excited
waiting to see the proofs of them these as I did with the first ones. I hope
you like them too.

I am feeling very lucky to now have some biblets (or widgets) from Book2Look (http://book2look.com/) that allow the opening chapters of all three of my books to be read and shared, including my latest Inspector Hobbes and the Gold Diggers (http://www.book2look.co.uk/vBook.aspx?id=o8I6rbXQPo) which is published on 30 September 2014. They also include links to some of the reviews.

The biblets are now available for all the books in the unhuman series of Cotswold comedy crime fantasies, or humorous mysteries. They are cozy detective stories with lashings of great food and. feature the same selection of characters, including:

Inspector Hobbes - the unhuman and occasionally monstrous detective

Andy Caplet - the hapless narrator of the story

Mrs Goodfellow - the unsettling and kind housekeeper and magnificant cook

Dregs - the delinquent dog

So far there are three adventures and the books themselves are available as paperback or in kindle, epub or ibook formats from all the main e-retailers and are available to order from bookshops.

Inspector Hobbes was inspired by a programme in which Alan Titchmarsh, who was made up as a Neanderthal but dressed in normal modern clothes, walked down a busy street and only attracted one person’s attention. It made me think, what if Neanderthals, or possibly individuals from some other fallen branch of the human tree, still existed in our midst, but were generally unremarked? Shortly after, Inspector Hobbes came to life as a character in a short story. The façade of being a police detective hid the fact that he was not quite human, that he possessed extraordinary strength and retained certain animal characteristics and senses.

Since it was tricky to get into his ‘unhuman’ mind, in the same way that I cannot really understand what is going on in a dog’s head, I decided to use a first person narrator, similar to Conan Doyle’s Dr Watson. Andy Caplet became my narrator and I made him a local reporter to give him a reason for meeting Hobbes. Andy's name came from seeing an old photograph of composers Claude Debussy and André Caplet; Debussy came across as large and hairy, a bit like I imagined Hobbes, whereas Caplet appeared small and insignificant. As the novel developed, Andy, struggling against his many flaws, turned into the central character.

I wrote about some the influences behind the stories in my blog 'Alan Titchmarch was my inspiration for writing Inspector Hobbes and the Blood' http://blog.wilkiemartin.com/search/label/Alan%20Titchmarsh

Inspector Hobbes and the Blood, unhuman I, is a fast-paced comedy crime fantasy set in the Cotswolds. When Andy Caplet, an inept local reporter, is assigned to Inspector Hobbes, a police officer with a troubling reputation, he has no idea what horrors his future holds.

‘I ought to tell you, dear, he can get rather wild when he’s hungry’

In my blog 'What's in the Blood' I discuss some of the reasoning behind the title. http://blog.wilkiemartin.com/2013/10/whats-in-blood_7.html
Again set in the Cotswolds, it concerns Andy's infatuation with a dangerously beautiful woman during Hobbes’s investigations into sheep deaths and the mysterious disappearance of pheasants. These incidents appear to be connected to a rash of big cat sightings and something horrible seems to be lurking in the woods, something that will arouse Andy’s primeval terrors.
Receiving unwanted attention after foiling an armed robbery, the unhuman Inspector Hobbes takes a long-overdue camping holiday, with Andy, his accident-prone friend, and Dregs, the delinquent dog. In the bleak and dangerous Blacker Mountains, Andy stumbles across something shocking, before falling for an attractive widow. On their return to the sleepy Cotswold town of Sorenchester, Hobbes is dumbfounded when Kathy, a reminder of his hippy days, turns up on the doorstep with her baggage.
It depends on how blood is interpreted, for it can mean many things.

Blood is vital for life. Andy, my hapless narrator, was living a sort of half-life before meeting Inspector Hobbes; Hobbes became a vital force, almost like a blood transfusion, to bring Andy back to full life.

Blood can be used in the sense of 'it's in the blood', meaning a certain feature, or set of behaviours, regarded as part of someone's nature or inherited characteristics. Since one of the themes of the book is nature vs nurture, how much of an individual's behaviour is genetic, and how much comes from upbringing, this sense seemed appropriate. Inspector Hobbes, although having a fundamentally savage nature, remains civilized, at least for most of the time. Andy, on the other hand, starts to learn that he has spirit and strength of character, traits that have largely been suppressed by the way he was brought up. Hobbes was adopted; Andy was raised by his natural parents.

There is also a theme of blood sacrifice. On one level, this manifests as a selfish urge to kill for a character's own insane needs. On another level, Hobbes, going about his duty, puts his own life on the line to try and rescue a member of the public. Then, Andy risks all, abandoning his habitual selfishness and cowardice, to help.

There is hot blood, a passionate, fiery nature, as exemplified by Hobbes, in comparison to cold blooded other characters, especially in their plans to murder.

There is the verb 'to blood', meaning to initiate. Hobbes initiates Andy into his world, where not everything is how it appears on the surface. Andy is also 'fresh blood' in Hobbes's circle of friends.

And, yes, the title does also encompass some darker meanings, such as bloodbath, blood-letting, and a little blood-curdling!

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Alan Titchmarsh as inspiration

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">The initial inspiration for Inspector Hobbes
came from seeing a television programme in which Alan Titchmarsh, made up to
look like a Neanderthal, walked through a busy street. If I remember rightly,
only one person, a young woman, really noticed him, and stared for a moment.
This gave me the idea that Neanderthals, or possibly individuals from some other branch of the
human tree, might still exist, living in our midst, generally unremarked. Then, one
evening, sometime later, I visited a local video store, where a family renting
videos struck me as so strange in their manners, appearance, and speech that it
brought the Titchmarsh Neanderthal, and the concept that they are still among
us, back to mind.

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Shortly
afterwards, Inspector Hobbes came to life as a character in a short story. He,
concealed behind the façade of a police detective, was not quite human, being
of extraordinary strength, and having retained certain animal characteristics
and senses. People hearing the story seemed to find the character appealing, so
I wrote a couple more, playing around with the character. Although these went
reasonably well, I thought they weren't really going anywhere, but that Hobbes
might be able to sustain a novel.

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">And Sherlock Holmes

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">An early
problem was that I found I was unable to get into his mind, in the same way I
would be unable to comprehend what is happening in the mind of, say, a dog.
Although I could have used a third person narrative form, I thought about the
Sherlock Holmes stories, being a fan of them. In these, since Holmes' thought
processes are obviously so different to those of normal people, Conan-Doyle
used the device of a narrator, Dr Watson, to carry the story. I decided to do
something similar, and Andy Caplet became my narrator. Since I needed a reason
to get Andy involved with Hobbes, I made him a local reporter. Andy's name came
from an old photograph I'd seen of composers Claude Debussy and Andre Caplet
together. Debussy was large and hairy, a bit like I imagined Hobbes, whereas
Caplet appeared small and insignificant. As the novel developed, Andy,
struggling against his many flaws, became the central character.

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Mrs
Goodfellow, the eccentric, tooth-collecting housekeeper, appeared fully formed,
and apparently out of nowhere. She just seemed to be essential, and the sort of
woman who would look after and care for an outsider like Hobbes. As for Dregs,
Hobbes's big, bad dog, I wasn't sure why he appeared, but knew he was
necessary. Even so, it was only as the plot worked itself out that I understood
why.

<span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">Other
characters, particularly the non-human ones, developed from the sort of people
Hobbes, would know. After all, if you accept the possibility of one non-human
being living in town, it is a small stretch to accept there may be others, even
if they are not all the same, and mythic beings may have had some basis in
fact. The plot developed from these characters, as well as those Andy knew. I
made up the word unhuman to describe
Hobbes, rather than using inhuman, which carries connotations of cruelty.
<span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">I set the
action in and around Sorenchester, a fictional Cotswold town. All the characters
and the locations in the book are entirely fictitious, arising from my own
warped mind.
<span style="font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">At the end
of Inspector Hobbes and the Blood, realising there was still potential for
stories with Andy, Hobbes, Mrs Goodfellow and Dregs, I began the, now
completed, second book in the unhuman series, Inspector Hobbes and the Curse,
and am now editing the third in the series.
The Fatal Funeral of Uncle Ray

Here is my latest nonsense poem, The Fatal Funeral of Uncle Ray, which I hope you enjoy. I had the following lines going round and round in my head insisting on being written:

'Many folk perished, so it's said, the day
of the fatal funeral of Uncle Ray.'

I finished it (if a poem can ever be finished) last week and recorded it on Sunday, which was one of the RSPB birdwatch days. The birds seemed to know this and were out in force, singing merrily and loudly all the time. They weren't even distracted when we gave up and fed them, in the hope they would stuff their beaks and shut up. At the time of recording the noise from birds and cars didn't seem too bad but, on playback, they came over very loud. The robin was especially magnificent (I'd heard it practicing the previous week when it had been singing very quietly but it chose to really go for it as soon as we started recording). Luckily on the final recording, (the 7th - it was far too cold to do any more withouth bits dropping off) the birds weren't so close to the microphone and only one car passed. I think this final recording is ok but I can see why professionals use directional mics.

The poem had its first outing at Writers in the Brewery on Thursday 26 Jan 2012, when I also used my kindle for the first time, having just loaded The Fatal Funeral of Uncle Ray onto it. I must remember to choose a larger font next time since reading from it at home is far easier than reading with slightly odd lighting.

The same night at the Brewery, as well as some other readings of poetry and prose there was some excellent music from Keith Thompson, sometimes with Nick John (of Lyadrive) on vocals.

Let me know what you think.

I've put 5 short poems onto Youtube but there will be a short break before I put up anymore. This posting gives the procedure used to create and upload the videos, so I know how I did it when I come to make the next one! I hope you find it helpful.

Shooting the video

After an unsuccessful attempt to buy a camcorder from Tesco, I found my digital camera allowed me to record a video that was long enough for my short poems and had adequate sound recording. My videos have, therefore, been recorded with a Canon IXUS 8515.

Choose the location to film and what you're going to wear.

Take a few photo stills first to check the background and to get any snaps you might want to use in the finished video.

Turn off any background sounds - any fans or filters (for instance in a fish tank).

Stabilise the camera and put it into position.

Once the recording has started, wait for about 3 seconds before speaking - so you can edit out any camera click at the beginning - and, for the same reason, wait for 3 seconds when you've finished before switching it off.

Don't speak too quickly.

Take the card out and transfer the files to your computer.

Make into a movie

In Microsoft Movie Maker, make a 'New Project'.

Use 'Import Media' and import your video files and any snaps you want to use that you have copied to the computer.

If not already selected, tick 'View' ->'Timeline'.

If not already selected, use the drop-down box at the top of the screen to select 'Imported media'.

Select the video or photo you want to use and drag it down to the timeline at the bottom and drop there. Drag and drop in all the items you want and put them in the required order. Try to make sure the actual video content starts before 14 seconds or people are likely to stop watching.

On the left hand side, select 'Titles and Credits'.

If the video has clicks at the start or end, drag the beginning or ending bar in so they are missed.

Select 'Starting title or ending credits', enter the text you want.

Choose 'Change the text font and color' to pick the color, font type and size.

Choose 'Change the title animation' if you want to add an effect to how the text is shown (ticker tape, flying in etc).

If you want to add text over the video at different points, right click the video and select 'Title on the selected clip', or use the 'Titles and Credits' option on the left. If you want to add a lot of text at different points, then at the top of the Timeline section select the + magnifying glass to expand the timeline - it then shows smaller intervals and makes it easier to match the size of the text area to the length you want it to display.

For each text section and for each video or photo choose any special effect (eg fade in or fade out etc) but don't use too many as they slow down the loading of the video.

Select the photos and the opening and closing titles on the Timeline at the bottom of the screen and drag in or out the right hand end to make the time they display shorter or longer as wanted (I think the default length is a bit too long).

Right click the photos or video and select 'Effects' to add any effect (don't use too many as it slows down the load time).

You can also add audio tracks, although I used the audio on the original recordings.

Play the movie at any point to check your settings.

When you have something you are happy with select File ->'Publish Movie'. These are the settings I used for this:

Publish to this computer

Next

Enter filename and choose folder

Next

Best quality for playback on my computer

Publish

Play movie when I finish

Finish

Change and re-publish the movie as many times as you want, and don't forget to save it.

Make into a flash video

Once you have something you are happy with then you can upload the Microsoft Movie you made above to Youtube. However, if you want something that will be in a smaller file and will load and run quicker (though with reduced quality) then convert it into a flash video. I used 'Free FLV Converter' from http://www.koyotesoft.com/.

Open 'Free FLV Converter'.

Select 'Conversion to FLV'.

Browse and then select the movie you made above. 'Open' it.

Change the 'Output path' if you want to change the path or name.

I didn't change any other settings as the default ones were the settings recommended by Youtube already.

Select 'Convert'.

Load to youtube

Sign in to Youtube.

At the top of the screen, select 'Upload'.

Select 'Upload video', and select your .flv file.

While it is uploading you can change the details of the video, set the 'Privacy' to 'Private' so you can select the settings you want before you publish it. Or you can change any of these settings after it has uploaded.

Add a title and description.

Set some tags (find ones on similar videos and use similar settings as these will help people to find your video).

Select a category.

If this is the first video then you will have to wait for a thumbnail image to be available. Youtube will give you 3 to choose from, select the one you prefer.

Set any other settings, comments, voting, responses and location if you want to etc.

Run the video and check you are happy with how fast it loads.

Once you are happy, set 'Privacy' to 'Public'.

It is now available to the world (if Public) or to selected users if you use a list.

Change settings on youtube

You can go back and change the settings at any time by selecting 'My Videos', select the video, and 'Edit'.

If you have Youtube friends or subscribers then they will get an update about your video anyway, but you can also send them a note using Youtube messaging or sharing.

Create a 'Playlist' and add your video to it.

Like it and add it to your favourites.

Select your Channel page, make sure your channel has channel tags and is visible.

Select the 'Videos and Playlist' tab and select the playlist you put your video into and decide how you want all playlists to appear on your channel page and configure any other settings.

Don't forget to tell people it is there - facebook, twitter etc, and, if you have them, put a link to it on your website or facebook page (you will need to allow 'Embedding' of the video in the settings if you want to do this - though this is enabled by default).

Making a video is great fun and it only takes a few minutes to perform the above and upload it. Once it is loaded you can use Youtube->Account->Insight to see how many views you are getting and where in the world it has been seen. Amazing.

Let me know how you get on.
So were about four hundred other writers, literary agents, publishers and book doctors. I think this was the first event of its kind in the UK but plans are underway for next year. I went there to learn from published authors, for a couple of one to one sessions with agents, to find out about the publishing industry and to meet people. I thought it might feel strange to be a student at University again, after a gap of thirty years, but it wasn't. I'm sure that was because nearly everyone I met had a similar interest. They were friendly, good fun, hard working, hard drinking and entertaining. Student accommodation has improved immensely since my time and I did miss the old squalor, degradation and misery but, then, I'm funny like that. The University grounds contain the largest plastic-bottomed lake in Europe and the noisiest, nosiest collection of ducks and geese.

The weekend was divided into keynote addresses, workshops, one-to-one meetings with agents and literary death matches. Best selling author Katie Fforde, a Stroudie, kicked off the event with a witty address built around her ten rules for writing success. Perhaps the most important one is to persevere; it took her eight years of hard writing to get published, which is not an unusually long time-scale.

Then there were workshops. I attended ones on creating a sense of place; the likelihood that Ebooks are the future of publishing; plotting; publishing and using the media to promote a book. These consolidated workshops and courses I'd done before and provided some valuable new insights. Claire Siemaszkiewicz's Ebooks workshop was particularly insightful. In addition she brought some sample e-readers, which have come a long way since I first saw one. I was surprised that this workshop wasn't better attended, though I suspect some were put off by Claire being an erotic fiction publisher. They missed out on a very informative session. Her surname should be borne in mind, if only for use in the new version of Scrabble.

I had one-on-one sessions with a literary agent and a talent scout. Though neither said (as I'd hoped in my more optimistic moments) that my novel was the best they'd ever read, they provided insightful criticisms that I think will enable me to get it right in the end. They certainly provided the impetus to rewrite the first chapter as soon as I got back.

On Saturday evening we enjoyed a gala dinner, followed by the Literary Death Match! In this a selection of established and unpublished authors read and performed pieces of their work in an effort to win over the audience and judges. This was great fun, with the unpublished writers holding their own rather well. The popular vote went to Adele Geras for her moving episode based on the sack of Troy but Mary Flood, unpublished as yet, won the judges' vote. From the also reads, Veronica Henry's erotic story was hilarious, as was Toby Frost's bizarre fantasy (from an excellent book - which I am now reading The Wrath of the Lemming Men http://bit.ly/9sa9HB). I also loved John Taylor's moving and evocative piece.

Roger Ellory provided the Festival's finale. His was a funny but revealing address. He referred to a poll that suggested that being a writer is the second most desired profession, after Premier League footballer. For those believing it to be a romantic and lucrative profession, he provided some thought provoking figures: 80% of books published in the UK sell fewer than 500 copies; the average published author can expect to make £7000 a year; only 2% of published books published can be classed as 'best sellers. If you're going into writing to make lots of money, then you may be disappointed. However, if you write because it is a passion then you have a chance of success. He, like Katie, stressed the importance of persistence.

When I got home I was exhausted and my head was still spinning. I'd learned a lot, been entertained and met some fabulous people. Looking back, there were other workshops that I would have liked to attend, had time permitted. Maybe next year.

Thanks to the Writers' Workshop for hosting it.

Workshop Notes

Workshop notes http://www.festivalofwriting.com/notes2010.html

Other blogs and comments on the festival:

WritersCircle – York Festival of Writing Report http://www.mywriterscircle.com/index.php?topic=27232.0

Butterfly in flames – Festival of Writing 2010, York http://www.butterflyinflames.net/Site/Butterfly%20in%20Flames%20Studio%20Blog/3D5E7F3C-345A-45EB-AA68-51D85E6F5D38.html

Matt Hoilton – There and back again.. or a Day at York http://matthiltonbooks.blogspot.com/2010/04/there-and-back-againor-day-at-york.html

Jane Lovering – Getting Snappy http://janelovering.blogspot.com/2010/04/getting-snappy.html

Verity Ferrel – York Festival of Writing April 2010 http://verityfarrell1.wordpress.com/2010/04/15/york-festival-of-writing-april-2010/

Miranda Dickinson - Gives Us another view of The York Festival of Writing
http://romanticnovelistsassociationblog.blogspot.com/2010/04/miranda-dickinson-gives-us-another-view.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+RomanticNovelistsAssociationBlog+%28Romantic+Novelists%27+Association+Blog%29

Davina Pearson - The festival of Writing – Wow http://www.davinapearson.com/component/content/article/1-blog/45-the-festival-of-writing-wow

The Word Cloud Event – Festival of Writing http://www.thewordcloud.org/events/profile/66

The Word Cloud Forum – Festival of Writing
http://www.thewordcloud.org/forum/top/105

Authonomy Hisghlights from Festival of Writing http://blog.authonomy.com/2010/04/highlights-from-festival-of-writing.html

The Elephant in the Writing Room – York Festival of Writing: how was it for you? It felt right that I should attempt a fairy tale, especially as as friend of mine has been writing one (on a different subject) and as I received a copy of Grimm's fairy tales for Christmas. The language, imagery, blood-thirstiness and general insanity of the stories appealed. So I set out with a tale of Rat, Mouse and Gerbil adrift in a lifeboat. Rat's greed, arrogance, violence and thoughtlessness causes disaster. It was great fun to write an allegory and I hope the tale will appeal to adults and children and, most especially, the judges. I read it out at Writers in the Brewery and the response was promising.
Notes
